Westminster Abbey Tour

We will join Blue Blue Badge Guide, Viv Haxby, on an enlightening, in-depth and entertaining tour of The Coronation Church.  This spectacular gem of Gothic architecture has been the site of 39 coronations, and may Royal Weddings including that most recently of the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge.

As well as telling you about the history of the Abbey, Viv will conjure up for you all the pomp and majestey of the important events which have taken place. There are 17 monachs buried in the Abbey along with countless other people who have had an impact on the political, literary and scientific life of our nation.  We will hear about some of them, as well as the moving story behind the Tomb of the unknown Warrior. 

OJ and Friends Carol Service 2011

The Headmaster Martin Collier would like to invite you to join him for the 2011 OJ and Friends Carol Service on Sunday 11 December 2011 at 7.15pm in the Chapel. The School Choir will be singing and there will be mulled wine and mince pies in the Dining Hall following the service. 

Chelsea Walk with Blue Badge Guide Viv Haxby

Back by Popular demand we will be joining Blue Badge Guide, Viv Haxby on a tour of the picturesque and historical area of Chelsea, a walk that has something for everyone.  She will lead us through the Chelsea Streets and we will hear about princes and punks; painters and poets; Pensioners and 'Poppins'. 

 

OJ Sunday 2011

Sports Day!

This year OJ Sunday, 3 July, has a sporting theme as well as the traditional activities that make OJ Sunday so popular and we very much hope you will be able to come along with your families and join us.  We are hosting all the OJ Sporting clubs and are arranging matches in: Football, Cricket, Fives, Netball and Rugby sevens.  There will also be a shooting competition, in the school range, and a golf putting competition too!  In addition we will have Tours of the School, Children's activities on the Quad and back by popular demand Richard Hughes will be taking a Historical look around the School site.

Olympic Park Coach Tour

Thanks to the help of one of our St John's Friends volunteers we have been able to arrange a coach tour of the Olympic Park on 8 June 2011.  It is a unique chance to look around the Olympic Park site where you will be able to see all the major venues on the Park taking shape, including the Olympic Stadium and Aquatics Centre, and also learn about the environmental and community programmes there.

Choral Evensong for the Foundation

Friends are very welcome to attend the Choral Evensong for the Foundation at St John's on Wednesday 18 May at 6.30pm.  The service will be followed by a drinks reception in the Dining Hall.  If you would like to attend, please register with the Development Office.

WW1 Battlefields Tour - 3rd to 6th May 2011

Richard Hughes, former Head of History, will be leading another tour of the Battlefields of Northern Europe for OJs, Friends and parents.  Last year's event was a great success and we still have one or two places available on the 2011 tour, which will take place between 3rd and 6th May 2011.

The cost is approx £345* for a single (£620 for a double) and includes coach hire, a dedicated full time driver, return ferry crossing and 3 nights Bed and Breakfast in Arras and Ypres. 

The Circles, Squares and Triangles of Bloomsbury: British Museum Guided Tour and Walk

Following the sell-out success of our Autumn event we are delighted to have the services again of Blue Badge Guide Viv Haxby, who will be leading us on a guided walk around Bloomsbury and look into the British Museum.  We will explore this peaceful area of London characterised  by its association with the Arts, Medicine and Academia.  Viv will be talking about:  Museums and Medicine; Charles Dickens and Virginia Wolfe; George III and Adolf Hitler; TS Eliot and Coldplay; London's Foundlings and Faber&Faber; anaesthesia and the Pre-Raphaelites. And all in the shadow of some of London's most pleasing architecture!
